We believe that knowledge, skills and expertise are vital in delivering quality care and diagnostics. That’s why we are continually investing in the workforce of the future and support National Apprenticeship Week.
As the second-largest employer of radiographers in the UK, apprentices are integral to our workforce strategy and it’s important to celebrate their successes and showcase how they’re developing an rewarding career with us.

Susan has been a valued member of Preston PET-CT for seven years, working as a Clinical Assistant before progressing to Assistant Practitioner, deepening her clinical knowledge and taking on greater responsibilities in patient care.
“I was inspired by the experienced team members I work with at Preston PET to pursue my clinical career,” Susan reflects.
Throughout her apprenticeship, Susan developed skills that have shaped the way she approaches her role:
"Dealing with cancer patients allows me the time to discuss and explain the procedure and pathway with them, ensuring they fully understand and are happy to continue with their appointment.”
Alliance Medical provided Susan with dedicated learning time, a supportive mentor and a positive team environment. This helped her balance work and study, giving her the confidence to take on new responsibilities.
“The support I received was invaluable. Having a mentor and a strong clinical team around me made all the difference. The apprenticeship taught me so much about teamwork and delivering high standards of care.”
Susan reflects that the process has been both challenging and rewarding. The biggest value has been increased confidence in performing and understanding scanning procedures, a skill she expertly applied daily in her role. She also credits her apprenticeship with strengthening her teamwork and communication skills, allowing her to thrive in a fast-paced clinical environment.
“We work together in a flexible manner to ensure patient care is always at the forefront. Excellent communication within the team ensures we deliver the best care while supporting one another.”
Susan’s journey continues with a Radiography Top-Up Course, set to begin in March 2025, as part of her long-term goal to become a Radiographer. Good luck Susan, we'll be here to support you!
Bruno's radiography career began after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy. Looking for hands-on experience in a clinical setting, he joined our one-year graduate scheme, starting as a PET-CT technologist before securing HCPC registration.
“This journey has allowed me to gain valuable practical experience and refine my skills as a diagnostic radiographer. Continuous learning is vital in this field, and AML has provided an excellent platform for development.”
For many new graduates, the transition to a clinical setting can be daunting. Bruno talked to us about impostor syndrome - a feeling of self-doubt common among early-career professionals. However, he praised our graduate programme as being well structured, allowing hands-on experience in a supportive environment that boosted his confidence.
“The programme allowed me the time to reflect, absorb knowledge, and grow professionally at my own pace. The well-structured curriculum gave me a strong foundation, helping me build both my skills and confidence. Our 12-hour shift pattern means we work three or four days a week, giving us extended periods of rest. This balance is crucial for both our well-being and the quality of care we provide.”
Alliance Medical also support continuous education by funding both online and in-person training opportunities, allowing radiographers like Bruno to pursue courses aligned with their professional interests.
“This level of flexibility and investment in education makes Alliance Medical an ideal workplace for anyone passionate about radiography.”
Having joined us from Portugal, we asked Bruno how he found the transition to working in a new country and healthcare system. He said:
"The transition has been smooth, largely due to the high standards of healthcare in Portugal, which are similar to those in the UK. One key difference is the larger budget available here, allowing access to more advanced tools and technologies. Culturally, working in a new environment has been enriching. At Alliance Medical, we embrace diversity, and being part of a multicultural team has broadened my perspective, reinforcing the belief that respect leads to shared success."
Bruno’s ambitions extend beyond clinical practice. Having recently completed a Master’s in Business Management and leadership courses with us, he is preparing for a future in healthcare leadership.
“I hope to progress into a leadership role where I can contribute to the growth and success of a team. AML provides fantastic career progression opportunities, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
Relocating for work is a big decision, and Bruno encourages others to fully prepare before making the leap.
“Being away from family and familiar surroundings can be challenging. My advice? Research everything—housing, banking, taxes, transportation, and culture. The more informed you are, the smoother the transition will be.”
Bruno’s journey from graduate radiographer to aspiring leader is just one example of the opportunities available at Alliance Medical. We wish you all the best in the future Bruno!
