Alliance Medical opens the UK’s first static PET-CT within a Community Diagnostic Centre
March 28, 2025
Sir Richard Leese CBE, Chair of NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board, officially unveiled the UK’s first permanent PET-CT facility located within a Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) – a landmark achievement delivered by Alliance Medical at their flagship centre in Oldham. The successful integration of advanced PET-CT is the next step in CDC service evolution and marks a new era in cancer care.
With the installation of a Siemens Biograph Vision 450 Digital PET-CT, patients in Greater Manchester now have access to some of the world’s most advanced diagnostic technology to help to diagnose cancer faster, earlier and better.
Developed in partnership with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, the new PET-CT service increases capacity from 17 to 30 patients per day with the potential to serve over 10,000 patients annually.
Alliance Medical are driving new change - PET-CT integration within CDCs is transforming cancer care delivery by bringing diagnostics into the heart of local communities. Patients no longer need to travel long distances or face lengthy waits for specialist scans.
“This isn’t just about better access,” says Pete Winchester, Alliance Medical's Managing Director. “It’s about creating real impact - reducing delays, improving treatment outcomes, and enhancing survival rates by diagnosing cancer earlier.”
This advanced scanner will accelerate diagnoses and improve patient outcomes through reduced waiting times and earlier treatment decisions. It will also enable shorter scan times, while retaining superior image quality and reducing radiation exposure for both patients and clinicians.
By leveraging AI-powered analytics and digital imaging advancements, the service ensures higher throughput while maintaining exceptional clinical quality.
Oldham CDC now offers a full suite of diagnostic services - including MRI, CT, PET-CT, and lung, heart, and blood testing - all within a single community-based facility. Oldham is a nationally recognised case study for innovative public-private partnership in healthcare.
This groundbreaking combined service is reducing elective and cancer wait times by bringing diagnostics closer to home. With centres such as Oldham and strong NHS partnerships, we're setting a new standard to radically transform clinical pathways.
Oldham is a testament to the strength of our public-private partnership model and its invaluable role in enhancing patient care.
