Urodynamics are used to detect the cause of incontinence, urgency and frequency or emptying disorders, or when surgery may be required to correct prolapse. They are carried out by a radiographer and Radiologist (Doctor) and care is taken to ensure your comfort and privacy.
It is advisable to postpone the tests if you have a urinary infection or a period.
The studies consist of a free flow rate and cystometry, which has a filling and emptying stage. It is important that you arrive with a full bladder, as a flow test is required prior to the commencement of your examination.
You can either arrive with a full bladder or, if this is difficult, come to the department 30-45 minutes prior to your appointment time where you can drink water in the waiting room. When you come down to the main department, you will be asked to change into a gown and perform the flow test.
Once in the x-ray room, very small catheters (tubes) will be inserted into your bladder and rectum. Your bladder will be filled through the catheter with contrast medium.
During the filling process you will be asked to comment on the degree of fullness and the presence of any urgency. When your bladder is full, the X-ray table will be rotated into a standing position and you will be asked to cough and strain to demonstrate the bladder neck position.
Finally, you will be asked to void, preferably in the standing position but if not, on a commode. Following this, the catheters will be removed and you will be free to get changed and leave. You can expect to be in the department for approximately 45 minutes. An information sheet will be given to you following the procedure.
It is wise to drink plenty of fluid for 24 hours after the test. If you have any symptoms of urinary infection (abdominal discomfort, stinging whilst passing urine or frequency) please contact us, your specialist or your General Practitioner for advice.
